Burton's Gerbil (Gerbillus burtoni) is very similar to many other Gerbillus species that inhabit North Africa. Burton's Gerbil is known from only a small part of Sudan. It is often considered to be just another name for The Greater Egyptian Gerbil, (G. pyramidum,) but now many taxonomists give it species status.

The above illustration is a hand-coloured lithograph from Vol Two of the Transactions of The Zoological Society of  London and was published in 1838 to accompany the first description of this species.
